Thoughts about Mashle

Just kinda mediocre in every way tbh... The "One Punch Man except in a Harry Potter caricature setting" concept is literally all there is to it. The jokes are expected and average. The art is bad, albeit in a way that's acceptable for this kind of gag manga, the notebook-scribble art is part of the deadpan humour, if that makes sense. But you've still got a couple meh attempts at more complicated perspectives and shonen character design that just remind you the artist simply isn't very good, which wasn't so much the case with the original pre-Murata One Punch Man, where the scribble was completely part of the appeal. At least it reads quick so I'm actually getting used to the characters (little bro is buying all the series, both he and J+sil like it for some reason) and I smile a couple times reading it by now but unless you're really in need of an OPM derivative (which I assume is the reason this exists) it's not particularly good in itself. In another era, when Jump wasn't lacking a lot of series including a good gag manga, I don't think this would've been given the time of day.

Oof yeah I still haven't really started going again since cinemas re-opened. Already missed a couple films I wanted to see and made zero efforts to watch those "people are talking about it so i guess i should go see it" type of films. Kinda annoying how I can only be into one type of media at a time apparently lol but anyway maybe starting a post will push me.

Funny that I started reading this right after Beelzebub (my bro bought them so I picked them up as well when I went to visit my parents) because speaking of visible-thanks-to-their-concept series, that live up to their concept thanks to effective humour and writing, this is... Not that.

This is one of the secondary Jump series I absolutely loved when it came out when I was in high school, I bought the early volumes and always remembered it fondly as one of those series that made Jump special, but it turns out I stopped reading quite early (one third in, and with lots of chaps skipped in the middle of that) due to leaving for Canada in 2011 and never caught up. I finally caught up and finished it and it's just as good as I remembered it!

Thoughts about Dr Stone

Followed up TPN with this as it's the other current shonen my bros are enjoying, and also because I enjoyed Sun-Ken Rock a long time ago and the art was the best aspect of it. Unlike Sun-Ken Rock Boichi is only the artist in Dr Stone, but it's still wonderful to see a Korean artist drawing one of the most popular mangas in Jump -- his art is that good of course but still, it's a sign of the times.

Thoughts about Spy x Family

Not much to say about this one, I only picked it up because I use the Jump+ app to read One Piece in Japanese for practice and it has a couple app exclusives of which this is apparently one of the most popular because the app kept promoting it to me. Had no idea what to expect, def not a wholesome comedy about a spy, an assassin, and a mind-reading little girl forming a pretend family for a mission in alternative Cold War-era Berlin, but it's funny and adorable and if you're looking for a light fun read to pass the time then absolutely try this. I decided to buy the volumes within a couple chaps, which I immediately lent to little bro and he absolutely devoured them, and then the other 2 bros + sil all loved it as well. There's only 4 volumes available here so far, and they're also being promoted in libraries the way they are in Japan, so I'm expecting this to translate into english internet hype eventually. Maybe when it gets an anime?

I suppose Way of the Househusband is the most similar current manga to compare it to, as a wholesome comedy with a family theme. SxF has less meme-able scenes than Househusband, which is a big part of what the latter's internet hype is based on, but it's funnier and has an engaging background plot, so imo it's better. There's at least one laugh-out-loud moment per volume, and it's cute all throughout. The art is similar, ie clean and simple, though Househusband's is better and more detailed while SpyxFamily leans more cartoony with round faces.

An easy rec!

Oof where to start with this one. When I say I can like a manga that is completely mediocre on a technical pov just based on its personality/potential, this is the epitome of that. I ended buying the series and only lent it to my bro/sil with the caveat that it really is technically not great, and they both thought it was shit lol. Still, I like it.

After so many years of not reading manga and only being vaguely aware of what the current generation of shonen is via tumblr and what my brothers are reading, getting back into it and finding stuff that gets me as excited as the stuff from back then is an amazing feeling. I felt this with Chainsaw Man (though now that it's been a few months I think my time away from manga probably made it seem better and more original than it actually was) and all the more with tpn which is a unique shonen, and an engrossing read that had me binge-reading in my bed until morning. Actual tankobons too, since my bro had them (I really should've listened all these years when they said it was good ahah) and yeah, definitely reconnecting with teenage me there. Anyway thoughts:

Reviewing Gangsta reminded me that I watched Karneval as well early this year, so I should write my thoughts about it before I banish it from my mind entirely. Quite frankly my memories of it are already completely faint, which, I mean, I always have a hard time remembering the stuff I watch but how fast I forgot about this one is a testament to how utterly awful it was. I remember managing to finish the last ep, thinking, "well. that was.... that." and deciding to move on and clearly it's worked considering I have a hard time recalling anything about the anime's excuse for a plot only 6 months later.

Got curious about this as someone who was a major fan for several years of Amano Akira's Katekyo Hitman Reborn, and who's been following her other endeavours from afar, especially her notable character design work on Psycho Pass. This new work of hers is a sort of modern spoof on Sherlock Holmes and the like (Poirot, etc) that's mostly gag but with a potentially unfolding classic shonen storyline.

Ok so Gangsta, obviously I'm already super into it lol.

It's one of those animangas that's been on my radar forever but I didn't have enough brain energy to properly read/watch it during its hype. I knew I'd like it though, I've always liked this genre of gritty mafia-adjacent universes with superhuman killers fighting each other for whatever reason (Jackals and Dogs: Bullets & Carnage come to mind), character design was obviously stand-out as well.

Ace's T-shirts & The Innocent Boy

This is something that's been brought up by quite a few people including in the SBS of the corresponding volume, but that I wanted to deconstruct a bit more: Ace's flashback T-shirts.

As said by Oda in the SBS, he wanted to show that Ace and Luffy wore different shirts every day and while Luffy got animal pun shirts, this is the theme he came up with for Ace. In case you were wondering, no it's not any more normal in Japanese to wear a shirt that just says a random edgy words like "pillage" than it is in English ahah. But since this is One Piece, the words aren't exactly random, and are sort of their own background gag.

Basically the words on Ace's t-shirts more or less describe what's happening on panel, such as:

Moving forward with Korean has felt like pulling teeth the last couple months. I'm sure it's mostly because of the general hell-mood vacuum september-february have been but I probably burned myself out to some degree, and as much as it annoys me it happened so fast and in such an easy phase (it's only doing textbooks so far), I should start looking for solutions. I've recently finally caved to bullet journaling and it looks like it's actually working -- hence the success at writing all the posts I've been putting off recently -- but before that I also told myself I should put a progress mark on my DW to acknowledge my progress so far.

So here it is. The textbook series I'm using is the Integrated Korean series.

Next knitting project. The tutorial I followed was so complete and newb-friendly (same woman whose beginner videos I use when I forget how to do a stitch) that I didn't feel a learning curve at all even though they're technically more complicated than my previous project. I suppose it helps that I'm completely comfortable with circular needles now.

In the end the only two things I learned was adding/decreasing stitches, and separating the rows in two, but I suppose that's all you need to know to make actual shapes! Feels like wizardry though. And they're totally wearable, unlike the legwarmers which are a bit of a weird fashion statement, so I couldn't be more happy with them. Sparks absolute joy.

Knitted White Mittens

Didn't learn patterns (which I learned are called "cabling" lol) with this in the end but I definitely will on my next project -- I wanna make a patchwork cushion cover :)
